Training package for working with unaccompanied asylum seeking children.

In July 2017 we conducted a training session at Priory Fostering, Bristol, to 30 people, among whom there were social workers, foster carers and employees of the fostering agency. The training addressed issues related to unconscious bias and UASC issues. We gave an instruction talk about unconscious bias and then we looked how that may affect the work with unaccompanied asylum seeking kids. We also looked at negative media representation of refugees and UASC and we discussed the similarities and differences between working with UASC and other LAC (look after children).

Interculture trains people working with or with a view to work with unaccompanied asylum seeking children to young people. We provide foster carers, teachers and social workers with an overview of the issues concerning unaccompanied asylum seeking children and young people (UASC &UASYP)

During the workshops participants:

  • Learn about the asylum process

  • Explore why children and young people leave their home country

  • Understand the implications for asylum seeking children and YP

  • Increase sensitivities towards the educational, physical and educational needs of asylum seeking children and young people

  • Develop their skills in meeting the needs of UASC and UASYP

  • Reflect on where they get their information about UASC and UASYP
